Over the course
of a week children’s author Terry Deary ran up to 15 miles every day – taking in wind, rain and the occasional spot
of sunshine to raise an impressive £5000
for the charity, Integrating Children.
As national news warned the UK of battering winds across the north of England,
Terry was already limbering up for his 100-mile Terry’s Hadrian’s Wall Run.
Terry and his
team were cheered off on Monday 12 September at Bowness-on-Solway by the children of Bowness Primary School, and
the support from fans, friends, family and the occasional rambler continued as
he progressed through his gruelling challenge.
Stopping at
various heritage sites along the way, Terry was still able to lift a pen and
sign books for young fans of his Horrible Histories books, before heading home
for a much-needed rest.
Completing the
main Hadrian’s Wall route on Saturday 17
September, Terry was welcomed by the cheering faces of Integrating
Children’s members, plus supporters including Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, as he arrived at Segedunum Roman Fort – his final stop.
Not content with
his 87 mile slog, Terry then
completed the Bupa Great North Run
the following day, taking his total to a huge 100 miles in just one week.
Terry said: “Since deciding to take on this
challenge, the growing support for the event and Integrating Children has been
incredible. It was extremely tough going, but an achievement I’m proud of – I
thoroughly recommend it as I feel fitter than ever!
“I can’t thank my
supporters enough, they kept me going when it was a hard slog, and all those
who sponsored me have donated to a wonderful charity that provides a valuable
service to disabled children in the local area.”
